Let's talk: SILICONE GEL VS DERMA WAX

Another post? In a matter of days? I know what you're thinking but no, I'm not sick I'm just super excited to do another discussion post!

Last time, out discussion was all about rainbow eyes and which product was better; Sleek or Revolution? But today we say bye to the pretty makeup and get back to where it's at: GORE.

My topic today is about silicone gel and derma wax and which is better to create a cut with. So, lets get started!

Sculpt Gel
Derma Wax

On the left we have: Silicone gel, and on the right: Derma Wax.

The type of silicone gel I used is called Scupt Gel and can be bought online for £19.95 for 150ml and the derma wax is from Grimas and can be bought for £10.99 for 60ml. So far I think we have a winner on price; although Sculpt Gel is more expensive compared to the Derma Wax, you get 90ml more for your money.

Moving on from the price, we'll take a look at how the products look.

The Sculpt Gel comes in three parts whereas the Derma Wax only comes in one. This is because the Sculpt Gel has to be done in very certain ways: part A, B and C must NEVER touch unless you are mixing the products. When removing some of each part of the Sculpt Gel I would definitely advise to use three seperate spatulas otherwise you will ruin your product.

With Derma Wax you only need to use the one as you dont need to mix it with anything in order for it to work.

So, Sculpt Gel may be a better value for money but if you accidently use your part A spatula in your part B pot, then you've ruined your product.

How to use Sculpt Gel: Mix equal parts of A and B and then half that amount of C and mix until they are all blended together.

How to use Derma Wax: Take a small amount of Derma Wax and roll it between your fingers to warm it up.

I think Derma Wax wins that one for easy use.

However, the Derma wax is very sticky and it justs gets stickier the warmer it gets which can make it hard to apply when compared to the Sculpt Gel. which is a more thick hair gel which is also sticky BUT it does dry whereas Derma Wax doesn't.

So, you have taken out your Derma Wax and have warmed it up, you're now ready to put it on your skin. I chose to do mine on my wrist as I find it an easy place to do it on; what you need to do now its to make it into a fat sausage shape and then apply it to the skin, use a moisturiser to smooth and blend in your edges and then use the spatula to get rid of the excess wax and then use the spatula to cut down the centre. When you've done that, then use a translucent powder to set it. I personally find this rather easy to do (as you can probably tell from the images).

With the Sculpt Gel, it takes a bit longer. It doesn't set straight away you have to keep handling it on your skin; apply it by scrapping in onto your spatula and then pressing it onto your skin, with Sculpt Gel on your skin (it may look a bit like a white slug), use a mosituriser to blend the edges out like with the Derma Wax but you have to manhandle it a bit more so it doesn't set badly (make sure you cut it before hand other wise you will actually have to cut parts out). Don't forget to use powder to set it.

In my opinion, Derma Wax won on the application stage.

Scupt Gel 2, Derma Wax 3

Finally, time to decorate your cut! You can use grease paints to redden the edges and darken the center of the cut to add depth and then move onto your woundfiller and blood (A how to make your own blood post is coming soon) and then have a bit of fun; in my sculpt gel wound i had a couple of maggots and in my Derma Wax one I had some fake glass!

When it comes to keeping the cuts, Sculpt Gel wins. This is because it lasts, it dries so it doesn't break up like Derma wax and it also acts like skin so you could even put needle and thread through it! (Sculpt Gel is best if working on a set where the wound is prominently seen whereas Derma Wax is good for something like a passing seen or photoshoot where there isn't much movement.

Sculpt Gel: 3, Derma Wax: 3

So, overall it seems like it's a draw! However, in my personal opinion I do prefer using Derma Wax as I just find it easier to blend when compared to the Silicone Gel!
